A Bold and Inviting Kitchen

Before

This client had lived in her condominium for 29 years and wanted a kitchen refresh.  The space was small, cramped and dark, with no exterior windows. An opening above her stove, into the adjoining den, provided a limited amount of natural light. Her original goal was to keep the existing footprint, change the cabinetry and expand the small opening by a few inches to allow a little more light into the room. She liked the orange colour of the kitchen walls and wanted cabinetry with flat panels to coordinate with the built-in bookcases in a small alcove near the entrance to the kitchen.

After

The client’s kitchen received a total transformation.  By removing the wall between the kitchen and the adjacent under-utilized den, the client received a flood of natural light. She more than doubled her counter space and gained significant storage, including full height pantry cupboards with roll-outs.  A desk area with a counter stool was carved out to provide laydown space for her laptop and open shelving above for cookbooks and display.  The laundry area was reconfigured to permit a side-by-side installation of the washer and dryer, hanging room for laundry, and additional shelving for supplies.  An eat-in area with a custom banquette, a bistro table and two chairs, offers a great space for breakfast, or for conversation during meal preparation. A wall-mounted TV further enhances the functionality of the space.  With beautiful views of the Ottawa skyline this is now the client’s favourite spot.
