Custom Cabinetry Care: Maintaining Elegance and Function for Years

At CPI Interiors, we understand that custom cabinetry is an investment in both beauty and functionality. With the right care and maintenance, your cabinetry can remain in excellent condition for years. By following these expert tips, we can ensure our cabinets stay as pristine as the day they were installed.

Cleaning Tips

Regular Dusting: We recommend using a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and debris. Regular dusting helps maintain the finish and prevents buildup over time. Dusting at least once a week ensures that grime and dirt don’t accumulate, keeping the cabinets looking fresh.

Gentle Cleaning: For everyday cleaning, we should use a damp microfiber cloth with mild dish soap diluted in water. Wipe gently and dry immediately with a clean, dry cotton bar cloth to prevent moisture damage.

Avoid Excessive Moisture: It’s essential to ensure that water or other liquids do not sit on cabinet surfaces for extended periods. Wiping up spills immediately helps prevent damage to the finish and underlying materials. Moisture exposure over time can cause warping and deterioration of the wood.

What to Avoid

No Full-Strength Cleaners: All-purpose cleaners (even natural ones), degreasers, or other harsh cleaning products should not be used, as they can damage the finish and void the warranty. Instead, opt for mild cleaners that are specifically designed for wood or laminate surfaces.

No Abrasive Materials: We should avoid using steel wool, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaners that can scratch and dull the surface. Even paper towels can sometimes be too harsh, so always opt for microfiber or soft cotton cloths.

No Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause discolouration. Using window coverings or curtains will help protect cabinets in brightly lit areas. If direct sunlight exposure is unavoidable, we can consider UV-resistant coatings or tinted window films.

Hardware Maintenance

  • Regularly tightening screws on hardware ensures they remain secure. Loose handles and hinges can lead to misalignment and potential damage over time.
  • Clean hardware with a damp cloth and mild soap, drying thoroughly afterward to prevent corrosion or wear.
  • If cabinet doors begin to sag or misalign, adjusting the hinges periodically can keep them properly fitted.

Additional Care for Cabinet Surfaces

For a deeper clean, we can wipe down cabinet surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in a mild solution of vinegar and water. Be sure to wring out excess moisture and wipe surfaces dry to avoid watermarks. Regular cleaning will help maintain the appearance and finish of our cabinets.

Avoid the Following When Cleaning Cabinets:

  • Cream cleaners or any cleaning product that contains abrasives→ can scratch and dull the finish.
  • Solvent-based cleaners→ They can break down the protective coating.
  • Bleach → can discolour the surface.
  • Waxes → can create a buildup that dulls the finish.

Heat & Moisture Precautions

Kitchen Appliances & Custom Cabinetry Protection

  • When running a self-clean oven cycle, it is best to pull the stove out a few inches to allow heat to escape away from the cabinets. The cleaning cycle generates intense heat, which could cause damage.
  • Kettles, coffee makers, grills, or other appliances that produce steam should be placed on the stove with the exhaust fan on or in an area without overhead cabinets, such as an island.
  • If steam gathers under cabinets and is not properly ventilated, cracking open a window can assist with airflow.

Sink Care & Maintenance

Over time, ‘rust’ marks may appear due to incidental contact with other metal objects like scrub pads, pots, or tin cans. This is not actual rust from the sink but residue transferred from external metal sources.

Custom Cabinetry Care: Maintaining Elegance and Function for YearsTo keep our sink in pristine condition:

  • Use Bar Keeper’s Friend (liquid version) and a Scotch-Brite Ultra Stainless Steel Sink Pad for effective cleaning. These products are readily available at most Canadian Tire stores or Bed, Bath & Beyond.
  • For daily maintenance, wash with simple dish soap and water.
  • For a deeper clean, use Bar Keeper’s Friend weekly.
  • Always clean along the grain of the stainless steel sink to maintain its natural shine.
  • Avoid leaving metal cans or utensils in the sink for prolonged periods, as they can cause stains.

Long-Term Cabinet Maintenance

Beyond routine cleaning, we should conduct periodic cabinet maintenance to extend the life of our cabinetry:

  • Inspect for signs of wear, including chips, scratches, and finish fading, and touch up as necessary.
  • Adjust hinges and drawer slides to maintain smooth operation.
