Demystifying Furniture Selection

Choosing the correct furniture for your space might seem straightforward, but with so many options it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

From quality, size, style, material, and placement, there are many considerations that can make or break a room design.

With extensive training in all aspects of furniture selection, designers can guide you towards the best pieces for your space. Let’s dig into a few of the ways that designers can help and take a look at a recent project where we helped our clients choose the perfect furniture for their cozy cottage living room.

Assessing Your Needs

Understanding your lifestyle and preferences is an essential first step for a designer to make furniture recommendations for you. This includes:

  • Exploring design styles and themes
  • Analyzing the space and its functional requirements
  • Identifying key areas and their functions
  • Space measurements and layout considerations
  • Budget considerations and setting priorities

At the first meeting, we took the time to discuss our clients’ needs and wants for their cottage living room and took detailed measurements so that we had everything we needed to select the right pieces.

Maximizing Space & Functionality

Once your designer understands your needs, the next step is to decide the best layout for your space. This will dictate the ideal size and placement for the new furniture, as well as reveal opportunities to incorporate multi-purpose pieces and storage solutions.

These clients didn’t know what furniture configuration would work best in their large space. In keeping with the scale of the room, we suggested a large sectional. We also made sure every seat had a place for a drink and there was adequate lighting for reading and playing games.

They also wanted a kid zone where their grandkids could play. Tucked off to one side, it’s a bright and cheerful nook for the kids that still feels like it belongs in the rest of the room.

Streamlining Material, Colour & Fabric Selection

Balancing aesthetics, quality, and budget can be tricky when choosing furniture. Designers know the best options at every price point and can guide you towards the materials and fabrics that are best for your needs. They may also nudge you to make unexpected choices in colour, material, and style that can elevate your space to the next level.

Our clients wanted quality pieces that would withstand being used by lots of people in a busy cottage. For the sectional, we selected a beautiful top grain leather that will only get more comfortable over time. The leather’s warm cognac colour relates to the natural elements surrounding the cottage and brings warmth to the room’s neutral palette.

Customizing The Details

Designers excel at personalizing furniture pieces to reflect the client’s style and preferences. This might include practical customizations such as adjusting the seat depth or height of a chair or selecting a softer or firmer cushion. Aesthetically, a designer might collaborate with artisans for a one-of-a-kind piece or curate the right mix of accessories to bring the design to life.

For this cottage makeover, we found the perfect artwork to complement the new furniture. The large-scale piece fills the wall above the sectional perfectly and the serene lake scene adds soft blue and green accent colours to the space.

Making Furniture Selection Stress-Free

Enlisting the help of a designer can make selecting your new furniture much easier. No more second guessing or regret – just beautiful, functional pieces that fit perfectly into your room and your life.

We had so much fun working with our clients to furnish this cozy cottage space. The result has the wow factor they wanted and is practical and welcoming for their entire family.
