Kids Spaces that Grow with Them

The challenge with designing kids spaces is ensuring that you are investing in pieces that will last, as well as listening to their point of view. It’s a bit of give-and-take, and hiring a designer can help take the pressure of making those big decisions off of the parents.

With many of our designers having children, we can attest to how quickly they move through phases. Find out how we helped this family create two fun and functional rooms for their 7 year old daughter!

Sofia is a sweet and energetic little girl that was dreaming of having a big girl room. She is lucky enough to have two rooms to use, one for sleeping and dressing, and the other for reading and doing school work.

Space for all activities

Do you want your child to have a desk in their room, a place to read, space to play, or to simply use the room for sleeping? These are questions that will help us determine the ideal floor plan for the room.

For example, knowing whether a desk is a must-have or not helps to determine the size of the bed—a twin, a double or even a queen.

If needed, we can create two floor plans—one for now and one for the future. This will show you how the room will evolve as your child grows up, giving you confidence to invest in the right quality pieces that will last for many years to come.

Generic colour scheme

After the floor plan, the next thing to determine is the colour scheme. We recommend staying away from specific characters, and choosing a colour scheme that can grow with them.

If your child is young, you can use an accent colour found in the rest of your house as jumping-off point. If your child is old enough to have opinions about colour, this is a great time to get them involved.

In this case, Sofia loved really bright hues, especially deep pink and yellow. We found an absolutely fabulous wallpaper mural, and we had so much fun using other colours from it around the room. Keeping the furniture and built-ins white helps calm the space and lets the colour stand out.

Kids space that was beautifully decorated to grow with the child. Bright hues were added to bring personality to the space and custom cabinetry was used to add functional storage.

Lots of Thoughtful Storage

Do you ever find that your kids have a hard time tidying their rooms? We’ve found that having an organized and decorated room encourages kids to clean up and take pride in their surroundings. It totally works for adults too!

While Sofia’s room had a large closet, it lacked shelves and rods at her height so that she can put things away on her own. We used custom cabinetry to create a new closet featuring adjustable shelves and double rods. As she grows, one of the rods can be removed to make room for longer dresses and pants.

In the reading room, we removed the doors on the closet and added adjustable shelving to make room for bins of stuffed animals, board games and books. As she grows, this space can be used to store school projects and art supplies.

Kids space custom cabinetry with open shelves to store games, books and what used to be clutter.

We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to help this family create rooms that they enjoy spending time in! They have already told us that Sofia is taking such great care of her big girl rooms, and she even makes her bed every morning! That’s a win for sure.
