There is nothing like crawling into a beautiful, cozy bed at the end of a long day.
Your bedroom should feel like a retreat, a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
But often, the primary bedroom is neglected in favour of common areas like the kitchen. It is easy to get stuck in the same bedroom style.
Our clients had the same bedroom decor and furniture for years. When they renovated their ensuite bathroom, they realized just how outdated their bedroom had become. They wanted a calm, modern feel to match the rest of their beautiful home and give them the retreat they deserved.
Update your bedroom furniture
If you’re like our clients, you’ve probably had the same bedroom set for years. It might be a matching set in a bulky wood style, or perhaps it is a mismatched collection of random pieces.
In this case, their furniture was very busy. Their bed frame was an intricate scroll-style that had been popular years ago. All of their other furniture pieces were in a different wood, so lacked cohesion.
Investing in matching pieces with clean lines created a more put-together and intentional look. A modern grey palette is a modern take on classic wood.
Consider custom drapery
Although blinds can be practical, they are not very welcoming on their own.
Choosing custom drapery can add a luxurious element, while still blocking that pesky morning light from ruining your sleep-in! Select fabrics that compliment, rather than compete with, the rest of your linens.
Layer your bed
A beautiful and inviting bed starts with the linens! There is a reason that hotel beds always look so gorgeous and inviting. Lots of layers makes everything feel sumptuous.
Start with a set of soft sheets – keep two or three sets on hand.
Next add a light coverlet or quilt. These are great for warmer nights, or to use under a summer weight duvet in the winter.
A summer weight duvet comes next. Choosing a duvet cover that is machine washable ensures it always looks fresh.
For your pillows, pick Euro Shams that match the coverlet/quilt. A queen should have two, and a king should have 3. The Standard Shams could match the duvet cover for a pulled together look. Add a decorative cushion with texture and contrast for interest.
The last layer is a reading or napping blanket in a super cozy fabric (like fur or fleece).
Laying your bed like this will make everything feel much more rich and comfortable.
Keep colours modern
For our clients, we selected furniture in a light grey, so we chose a darker grey wall colour. Knoxville Grey by Benjamin Moore was the perfect charcoal to tie everything together.
Cool paint tones tend to add a more modern feel.
